개요

비행 교관 과정(CFI)은 조종 훈련생을 가르칠 수 있는 권한을 가지게 되는 면장을 취득하는 것입니다. 일반적으로 미국의 항공사에 입사하기 위해서는 비행시간 약 1,500시간 정도를 가지고 항공사에 지원을 하게 됩니다. 이렇게 많은 비행시간을 민간 항공분야에서 쌓기 위해서는 비행교관생활을 하면서 학생을 가르치면서 쌓게 됩니다. 그러므로 보통 미국에서의 교관은 항공사에 입사하기위한 발판을 삶는 단계가 되겠습니다.
비행 교관 면장은 보통 가르 치고 Endorse 해줄 수 있는 권한에 따라, CFI, CFII, MEI, 세가지로 구분됩니다.
CFI(Certified Flight instructor)는 최초 교관이 되기위해 첫 번째로 취득하여야 하는 면장입니다. 단발 자가용 면장과 사업용 면장과정, Bienial Flight Review를 가르칠 수 있으며, VFR(Visual Flight Rule)에만 교육이 가능합니다.
CFII(Certified Flight Instrument Instructor)는 계기 비행 교관으로써, 계기 비행 훈련을 할 수 있는 면장입니다.
MEI(Multi-Engine Instructor)는 쌍발 비행 교관으로써, 쌍발 자가용 및 상업용 면장 교육을 할 수 있는 면장입니다. 보통 계기 비행 면장을 함께 가지고 있음으로써 쌍발과 단발 계기비행 및 VFR까지 모두 함께 훈련을 할 수 있도록 합니다.
일반적으로 교관 면장을 취득하는 대부분의 미국 현지인들의 경우 자가용 면장과 계기 비행 면장, 단발 상업용 면장을 먼저 취득한 후, 교관면장과 계기 비행 면장을 차례로 취득합니다. 쌍발 면장 취득엔 교육비용이 단발의 2배가 소요되므로, 이러한 부담을 줄이기 위해 이후 단발 비행 시간을 쌓으면서 쌍발 상업용 면장을 취득하려고 하는 교관이 대부분입니다.
